We welcomed George Corbett, Paul Shackford and videographer, Kevin Wetmore. Andrea Kaiser and Nora Pou introduced the guests at their tables. President Mitch Freeman opened the meeting and turned it over to Frank Rowbotham who masterfully MC’d the program. Andrea gave us an update on the Sol y Canto May fundraising concert. The first press release is due to come out as part of a widespread P.R. campaign for the event. The winners of the Essay Contest will be introduced at the Concert. Happy Dollars: Der, Shackford, DeFazio, Kaiser, Spoto, Adams, Rowbotham. Lucky Bob McGinness won the weekly raffle. A 56 second video on the 4-Way Test from Rotary International opened the program. Frank credited Nora Pou with the idea of an essay contest for Middle School students as part of her proposal for advancing the Vocational Avenue of Service within the Club. Nora along with Hank Petrilli co-sponsored the successful Stop Hunger campaign last April. Frank reviewed the 5 Avenues of Services. Principal Mark Ito of the Wellesley Middle School said a few words of appreciation...“The life-values of the Four Way Test will long resonate.” The Contest yielded twenty-three submissions with three finalists. Natasha Goddard, head of the English Department and teacher, Ms. Claire Lee, spoke a few words. “It was an opportunity for the students to look outside themselves.” Each student read their winning submission (in alphabetical order) and then were presented with a certificate and prize (iTunes gift card): Caroline Roy, first place; Madelyn Shultz, 2nd place, and Kleo Mitrokostas, 3rd place. Their families and Rotarians gave them a thunderous round of applause.
