Mitch introduced our guest speaker. Hans brings a wealth of private sector experience to the job and it was obvious as he presented issues before the town. Beginning with an update on snow removal Hans reviewed recent Special Town Meetings (approval of school repairs at the October meeting and the purchase of the North 40 at the January meeting). He stressed that maintenance of town building is ongoing and an important part of protecting town assets. An update on the North 40 included: due diligence on its environmental plan; town-wide approval in the March 3rd vote, and other issues including cleaning up the landfill (capping?) as the Town takes control of the site. 900 Worcester Street (St. James parcel) was finalized in November and now the church and rectory must be removed. An active Committee is working on its future use. Regarding the Annual Town Meeting in March, Hans outlined some issues at stake. There will be zoning articles. The budget is still $2 1/2 million out of balance and the Selectmen are working on health costs and school budget. He gave high kudos to the Town Government
Study Committee headed by Gig Babson. This talented group is working very hard to recommend a more efficient and effective form of government. The conversation switched back to the North 40 and eventual land use there. There are lots of issues involved including elementary school consolidation, playing fields (over the landfill) and much more. He touched briefly on the proposed Senior Center and the many large capital projects coming. Many Q&A’s addressed concerns about the North 40 and financing these high cost projects.
