Our young and enthusiastic guest speaker, Emma Collins, was introduced by Prez Mitch Freeman. She represents MARE (Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange). Emma has been working with them on their development and communication areas, acting as their “Ambassador of Good Will”.

She described MARE, a non-profit since 1957 working with finding families for foster care (children and teens) leading to more permanent adoption situations. Over 500 local youth in foster care are waiting for adoption. The average age is 8. She presented “Raymond and Ricky” and then “Wednesday’s Child with Jack Williams”. The Boston Globe has a weekly child available. She presented the costs of foster care/adoption ($8,000-$100K). Families (and children) are screened carefully as they try to match-up as best as possible. What happens after they finish their time (18 years) is not always rosy or successful. But she gave us some success stories. Andrea Kaiser mentioned there is a program called Transitions to help those after 18 years. MARE is a 501(C)3 and is building their Board and organization. They are looking for sponsorships. A 5K Run or family-friendly Walk is scheduled for Sunday May 17th from 10AM-1PM. FMI go to www. JordansWalkForAdoption.org.
